The 2024 election will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Offices up for election range from the president and vice president of the United States to local and municipal elections. Here's what you need to know to get ready to vote in the 2024 election.

All Illinois residents who are United States citizens, at least 18 years old and who have been a resident of their precinct for at least 30 days before Election Day can register to vote in Illinois.

In order to register to vote in-person, you will be asked to present two forms of identification, at least one of which that shows your current residence address. You can also register to vote or update your existing voter registration online. The form to register to vote is available in both English and Spanish.

The last day to register to vote in Illinois for the 2024 General Election is October 8, 2024. However, Illinois allows grace period voter registration from the 27th day before an election through Election Day. Grace period registration begins on October 9, 2024, and continues through November 5, 2024.

Grace period registration or voter registration changes must be done in-person at the Board of Elections office, a permanent polling place, any early voting site starting 15 days before Election Day, or at any location specifically designated for grace period registration and voting.

Grace period voting must be done in-person at the same time you register to vote, meaning you cannot register during grace period voting and not cast a ballot. The ballot you cast at that time cannot be revoked.

The first day of early voting in Illinois September 6, 2024. The last day for early voting in Illinois is the day before Election Day, November 4, 2024.

Early Voting in Chicago will start on Thursday, October 3 at 9:00am at the Voting Supersite (191 N. Clark) and Board Offices (69 W. Washington St. - 6th Floor). Early Voting in all 50 Wards of Chicago begins Monday, October 21 at 9:00am.

Voters who wish to cast their ballot by mail can file an application to vote by mail in Illinois starting on August 7, 2024. All main-in requests to vote by mail must be received by October 31, 2024, and in-person requests by November 4, 2024. Mail-in ballots must be postmarked or put in a drop box by the close of polls on Election Day.

If you request a mail-in ballot but want to vote in person in Illinois on Election Day, it is allowed but you must either submit to election judges your vote-by mail or a portion of the ballot for cancellation, fill out an affidavit that you never received a mail ballot and/or fill out an affidavit that they returned their mail-in ballot but the election authority did not receive t.

If you received a vote by mail ballot but did not return it, you will be able to cast a provisional ballot only.

All 118 Illinois State House districts will be on the ballot in 2024. Of those, 54 incumbent candidates are running for office unopposed.

There are 20 seats in the Illinois State Senate up for election in 2024. Some incumbents are running unopposed.
