Homicides over the last 12 months are trending down 14.3% when compared to last year, according to San Francisco Police Department data through April 13.

The murder rate over the last 12 months is down compared to the annual average over the last four years.

The city averaged about 2 homicides a month over the last 12 months. In 2021, that number was about 5 a month.

One way to think about the danger: four years ago, the murder rate was 6.9 per 100,000 residents. That’s lower than the risk of dying in a vehicle crash in California. The rate has changed to 3.7 in the last 12 months.

The risk is not the same neighborhood to neighborhood.

ABC7’s data team looked at the San Francisco Police Department’s crime incident data by police district from 2021 through April 13, 2025. Totals here include murders, but not involuntary manslaughter or justifiable homicide.

The map color codes each neighborhood by the homicide rate over the last 12 months. The three darker blues highlight neighborhoods where the murder rate is higher than the citywide rate.
