Homicides over the last 12 months are trending down 29.8% compared to 2022, according to the latest data available from the Philadelphia Police Department.

However, the murder rate over the last 12 months is down 31% compared to the annual average over the last three years, and the frequency of killings remains higher than it was before the pandemic.

The city averaged 7 homicides a week over the last 12 months. In 2019, that number was 7 a week.

Almost all of Philadelphia’s homicides are gun-related: Shootings made up 89% of Philly’s homicides last year and 91% of homicides so far this year. There you’ll find in-depth analyses and interactive charts and maps displaying the latest trends, as well as stories from individuals affected by gun violence and comments from experts and public officials.

One way to think about the danger: three years ago, the murder rate was 22.5 per 100,000 residents. That’s more than twice the likelihood of dying in a vehicle crash in Pennsylvania.

During the pandemic, a person’s chance of being murdered in Philadelphia rose to more than three times the risk of a fatal traffic crash.

The risk is not the same neighborhood to neighborhood.

Action News’ data team looked at the Philadelphia Police Department’s data by neighborhood from 2019 through April 28, 2024.

The map color-codes each neighborhood by the homicide rate over the last 12 months. The three darker blues highlight neighborhoods where the murder rate is higher than the citywide rate.

Many crimes do not end in an arrest: Philadelphia Police made arrests for just 19% of violent crimes and 7% of property crimes reported from 2019 through 2021.
